Sheffield Scores a Century
Sheffield Homes has become the 100th organisation to sign up to the City of Sanctuary movement in Sheffield. The event was marked at a special ceremony where Sheffield Homes signed a large-scale pledge, and City of Sanctuary Chair Inderjit Bhogal presented Sheffield Homes with a framed certificate of congratulations. Moving to Mars - screening and discussion
If you missed the premier of this film about Gateway refugees coming from Burma (via Thailand refugee camp) to Sheffield, and/or would like a further opportunity to watch and discuss it more fully, please join us at the Showroom Cinema on Friday December 18th, from 1pm.
We will have a sandwich lunch before watching the City of Sanctuary film (9mins) followed by "Moving to Mars" (83mins). After that we will ask for your reactions to the film and discuss any gaps, implications etc. with the aim of writing a contextual report which we will publish on the City of Sanctuary (indeed any other willing) website.
The film is due to be broadcast by Channel 4 in January and we would like this material to be available by the time of that and any other screenings of "Moving to Mars" so people have an opportunity to consider the film in the full context of migration and asylum.
The event is free, but we would ask for contributions from anyone able to pay (the actual cost will be about £9 per person). It would be helpful if you could let us know if you're intending to be there, by emailing Dan@cityofsanctuary.org
Showroom Cinema is on Paternoster Row, S1 2BX
Language Exchange - December 15th
Hallam Volunteering's Language Exchange, presented in partnership with Languages Sheffield. The Language Exchange brings people together to learn and share languages at a series of free evening events held in the HUBS. The evenings are a celebration of culture and provide an opportunity for individuals to speak their native language or learn a new one, all while meeting new people in a fun and relaxed environment.
The next event is Tuesday December 15th, 6 - 8pm at The HUBs, Hallam Union, 6 Paternoster Row, Sheffield (opposite the Showroom Cinema).
BBC My Story - Deadline
My Story is a BBC1 Campaign trying to find ordinary people that have remarkable true life stories.
The best 15 stories will be broadcast in a five part television series on BBC1 in 2010. There will be five winners who will have their stories made into individual books. The books will be ghostwritten by the publishers HarperCollins and printed with the storytellers name on. This
means that entrants do not have to worry about the style or quality of
their writing, we are just interested in the facts of the story. The books will be available to sell nationwide from the day after the programme is broadcast. The winners will also receive a cash advance of £20,000 on the sales of their book.
The closing date for entries is in just two weeks on 16th December 2009.
Entries can be submitted by going to www.bbc.co.uk/mystory and clicking the 'add your story' icon. Alternatively, entries can be sent by post - but they must have an entry form attached which can be requested from claire.mccready@princesstv.com
Entries can just be a summary of the story which is 300-1500 words long.
