Help us to reach 100!

95 local organisations have now signed up to help Sheffield be a City of
Sanctuary, by welcoming and including people seeking sanctuary in their
activities. Can you help us reach 100 organisations? If you are a member
of a local group or organisation that hasn't yet signed our resolution
of support, could you them to do so? For wording of the pledge of

Every Migrant Matters conference,
Thursday 18 June, 10am-4pm, including lunch and refreshments, Sheffield Hallam University.
Free to attend apart from business and statutory organisations.

The conference is organised in conjunction with the South Yorkshire
Refugee Community Organisation Forum (SYRCO Forum). It has a special
focus on the impact of a common EU asylum policy, but will be looking at
other areas concerning refugees and new migrants as well.
The conference will include a chance to feedback to the panel of
speakers on key issues, as well as workshops.

Refugee Week Launch, stallholders needed!

Refugee week is being launched on Saturday 13th June, 10-6pm with a concert on Devonshire Green.
If anyone would like to have a stall, campaigning, food, crafts or anything else with an international theme, please contact Sarah Eldridge at sarah.eldridge@nrc.org.uk
Stall space is free but you will need to bring your own table and chairs!

Jazz in the Field Benefit Concert in aid of Medical Foundation for Torture Victims, with The Baghdaddies, Stand out Riot and Danny Wallington.
Saturday 6th June, 6-9pm, Edale Playing Field, Hope Valley, Derbyshire.
£10 /£6 concessions, free for asylum seekers and children under 12.

The Baghdaddies will be bringing "an eclectic fusion of rhythms and melodies plucked from around the world" to this evening of live music for all the family in the natural amphitheatre of the Edale Valley. Bring your own deckchairs and enjoy locally served food, alcohol and hot or cold drinks.

Sheffield Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers

Sheffield CDAS is a campaigning organisation opposed to the Government's scapegoating of asylum seekers.
We support groups campaigning for individual and families of Asylum Seekers who are unjustly threatened with deportation.
The next CDAS meetings are on Wednesday 20th May, Tuesday 30th June, and Monday 27th July, all at 7.00pm at the Quaker Meeting House, 10 St James Street, Sheffield S1 2EW

Supporting Survivors - Free Workshop for Advice Services
Friday 26th June, 10am-1.30pm, Leeds Refugee Council.

This is a free event run by the Northern Refugee Centre and Solace, a charity which provides free counselling, psychotherapy and advocacy in the Y&H region to the survivors of persecution and exile,
It aims to increase awareness of issues around refugee women and survivors of violence, ensure advice services provide equal access to refugee and asylum seeking women who are survivors of violence, and to share good practice on how to respond appropriately.

Diversity in Volunteering - A Celebration

This photographic exhibition marks the 25th anniversary of National
Volunteers Week (1 - 7 June 2009), and celebrates the diversity of
people who volunteer in Sheffield, many of whom have overcome real
obstacles to do so. The photographs have been taken by students of
photography and capture the essence of volunteering, and its impact on
volunteers and the people they reach.
During National Volunteers Week, the Volunteer Centre team will be
available to talk about volunteering and involving diverse volunteers.

Petition to ban members of racist organisations from being employed within the Home Office

PCS Union in the Home Office have been negotiating for a number of years to get the department to ban employees from being members of racist organisations such as BNP, Combat 18 & National Front. So far they have been unwilling to do so, despite there being a ban for Prison Service and Police staff.
