Our local services – from the community-based Integration Networks to the Scottish Refugee Council – have suffered severe funding cuts, but we are determined that Glasgow will continue to be a place of safety, a city of sanctuary.

This meeting will be an informal roundtable discussion, with input from:
- Sekou Ouattara, chair of Govan & Craigton Integration Network, on refugees’ experiences of living in Glasgow, and being refused asylum.
- Gary Christie, Scottish Refugee Council, on the Stop Destitution campaign
- City of Sanctuary Glasgow on the asylum housing monitoring and support project, and the City of Sanctuary movement.
- Glasgow Destitution Network on the food distribution programme and night shelter.
- Community InfoSource, working on the Refugee Survival Trust scoping study into accommodation projects for people refused sanctuary in Glasgow.
There is a new private landlord for asylum seekers in Glasgow. Many people who have been refused sanctuary are facing another winter of homelessness and destitution.
This meeting will focus on what actions we can take to:
a) ensure people seeking sanctuary in the city are welcomed and can live in decent accommodation, with the help and support that they need;
b) provide support those who have been refused sanctuary, to help them access food, shelter and assistance;
c) form a new Glasgow City of Sanctuary steering group to build on the city’s culture of hospitality, and it’s reputation as a place of safety and welcome for people whose lives are in danger in their own countries.
